An important maintenance characteristic of your pool cue that is often overlooked is selection of a cue tip and use of the best chalk. These two are as important as the pool stick itself. They all play a part in the overall performance of your pool cue. If any one of the three are filled with inferior products, I guarantee you will not will be happy with the results. In my opinion, a hard leather tip is the best selection for a cue tip. Lepro is a French tip that I have preferred in the past. Once you have selected the proper tip you apply it to the cue. You can Google tips for applying a cue stick tip.
Then let it set for one full day. This gives the glue proper time to set up. Next you want to rough the tip and have a rounded surface. This is most conducive for holding chalk and the most favorable results will occur. I always break with my pool cue. This is why I need a hard tip. A soft tip over a short period of time will flatten out very soon if you break with a soft tip. I use a metal tip tapper for roughing my cue tip. You can purchase them in most any billiard supply store. I carry it in my pocket at all times I am playing. The chalk will stick much better to a properly roughed tip. Trust me.
Now for the chalk. If you look at the professionals or any accomplished player, you will always notice their selection of pool chalk is Master Chalk. I believe that Master is the best chalk and that is what I recommend. The grain seems to stick to the cue tip much better and that is what is extremely important. You will notice when a miss cue happens, the cause is the chalk has failed to hold the shot. You will miss cue much less with Master Chalk. You have a much greater chance of applying English or draw with Master Chalk. Sometimes you have to shoot left or right of center in order to get the cue ball to react favorably. As mentioned earlier, Master Chalk has a far less miss cue ratio then other chalk that is on the market.
When shooting a Masse, you have to shoot down vertically on the shot in order to bend the cue ball around another object ball. There is no way you can perform shots like those with inferior chalk. The more you practice you will develop a sense of awareness or expertise in shooting pool. Observation of accomplished players will offer many tips that will prove invaluable. You acquire information gradually and apply tips that will inevitably improve your game. You observe and apply tips that will work. It can be a very rewarding experience and provide a lifetime of awesome memories! All you need is the desire to learn and the necessary tools to achieve that dream.
